A brawler for Dragon Ball fans and beyond
ACCESSIBILITY in brawler games has always been an issue amongst casual gamers and new fans.
What may look like a rewarding game from the outside can often be a frustratingly fast-paced experience in practice.
Dragon Ball FighterZ goes a long way in making the genre accessible to newer fans while also catering to the demanding competitive community.
Fans of the Dragon Ball franchise itself will be pleased with Arc System Works commitment to absolutely nailing the aesthetic of the popular anime series.
Not only is the game incredibly gorgeous, the studio have taken the time to faithfully recreate characters and set pieces from the show to a tee.
Thankfully, Dragon Ball FighterZ is also as good in practice as its aestetic would suggest.
One very welcome feature implemented in the game is the special move and super input commands with are simple and universal across all of the 24 characters, meaning you rarely have to refer to the special move list.
The roster itself is everything fans could have wanted from this game. From oddball characters right the way up to the fan favourites, the selection of characters is well balanced and rendered in excellent detail.
The story is probably the only real weak link in this game. Ten or so hours of deritvative fan service eventually culminates in an underwhelming finale, removing some of the sheen applied by the rest of this tremendous game.
Unfortunately, the online play doesn’t receive the same polish applied to the rest of the game. Matches are frequently laggy, which is a huge no for a game that relies on such fast pace and accurate button inputs. Here’s hoping that Arc System Works irons out this kink in the coming weeks.
Dragon Ball FighterZ is a terrific brawler, punctuated by a commendable attention to detail and faithfulness to the Dragon Ball series.
