From the streams of Bunclody to the canals of Venice!
BUNCLODY is one of ten Irish towns to be showcased at the Venice Architectural Biennale 2018. The curators of Ireland’s National Pavilion at the international event are submitting an exhibition called Free Market, focusing on common spaces to be found in market towns and Bunclody is one of the towns selected.
The exhibition will explore how market towns are responding to new developments such as the motorway network and what initiatives have been undertaken to revitalise and restore them. The Dublin School of Architecture, DIT, have been working on images and interviews with local people and are looking forward to bringing the results to Venice.
Wexford County Council was keen to show off the ‘can-do atti- tude and community spirit’ which is evident among the Bunclody community and pointed out a number of notable achievements such as the inaugural Streams of Bunclody Festival, the new tourist office, the new public works at Market Square, to name but a few.
The inclusion in the Venice exhibition follows on from winning a special merit award under the Bank of Ireland National Awards for Enterprise Towns towards the end of last year. Chairperson of the Bunclody Town Team, Cllr Barbara Anne Murphy will now proudly fly the flag for the town in Venice in May this year.
There will also be a national road-show and a symposium on market towns in 2019 with Bunclody due to host its own exhibition.
