Action put on hold

-

FANS OF Wexford F.C. were looking forward to seeing their charges on home soil for the first time this season, not once but twice, on either side of the weekend. However, both games fell by the wayside due to the weather, with Friday’s SSE Airtricity First Division clash with U.C.D. postponed, along with the EA Sports Cup opener against Cobh Ramblers which was scheduled to go ahead last night (Monday).

The F.A.I. were a lot quicker than the G.A.A. , it must be said, in announcing full details of the re-fixtures.

News of the league postponement came in an e-mail on Wednesday, which also outlined that Wexford will now face the students on Monday, March 19, instead.

In the case of the cup game, Friday’s announcement that it was off also contained the news that Cobh will now travel to the southeast on Tuesday, March 13, with an 8 p.m. kick-off.

As for the G.A.A., they made it known on Thursday that the entire weekend league programme in both codes was called off.

They added that a full revised fixtures list would be issued yesterday (Monday), but as ‘a broad principle’ it should be noted that the plan was to proceed with round five games on March 10-11.

Turning back to the soccer, the upshot of the weather is that Wexford’s second league match will also be on the road, versus Longford Town at their impressive City Calling Stadium on the Strokestown Road this Saturday at 7.30 p.m.
