NEW PLAYGROUND

A small piece of history was made last week when, after almost 60 years the pupils of Boolavogue NS played in the playground at the lefthand side of the main school building, for the last time. A new classroom is due to be installed there shortly and a new playground has been constructed in the small pitch on the right of the school. When they returned from the ‘snow’ break, they were able to use the new playground. They and their parents could also use the new entrance into the new playground from the carpark sited where the Master’s house used to be.

The next development will see the installation of the new classroom. This has been faciliated thanks to the generosity of Alfred Champan, who has allowed the school authorities to knock down the ditch beside to school to allow easy access to the ‘old’ playground.

SNOW HOLIDAY

It may have been ‘no holiday’ for the parents but the pupils of Boolavogue NS welcomed the ‘snow holiday’ brought to them by the ‘Beast from the East’ and Storm Emma. The school was closed on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday last week due to the dangerous conditions and the snowfalls.

SOCCER NEWS

All schoolboy and schoolgirl soccer was cancelled last weekend due to the snow. The previous weekend, on Sunday, February 25, the ‘B’ team lost on penalties to Camolin Celtic in the Gwyn Jones Cup. Niall Finn had them ahead early in play but by halftime, Camolin had clawed back into the game and lead by 2-1. Sub Cathal Walsh set up Niall Finn for his second goal soon after the game resarted and it looked as if our lads would advance when Dean Fortune put them 3-2 ahead. With less than five minutes remaining, Camolin forced a draw, and defended it doggedly throughout extra time. Heartbreakingly, they came out the winners after a penalty shootout.

The ‘A’ team had better luck on the same day, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Neil O’Sullivan cup with a 2-0 win away to Killenagh. Jamie Dempsey Doyle put them 1-0 ahead before the break and Brendan ‘Frikki’ Burke added a second halfway throught the second half. Our defence was superb and goalie Bobby Larkin, outstanding while Johnny Fitzgerald was the player-of-thematch at centre back.

TABLE QUIZ

The table quiz, due to be held in the Harrow on Friday, March 2, had to be postponed due to the snow. It is hoped to hold it in the near future so make the best of the extra time to swot up on little known facts about Irish politicians, statistics on Mona- geer-Boolavogue hurlers and footballers, in particular the Junior ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams and scorelines from matches won by the St Cormac’s ‘A’ and ‘B; squads over the past few years. It might be worth your while reading the press cuttings on the St Cormac’s noticeboard.
