GAA CLUB NOTES

The intermediate hurling and junior B league matches were postponed at the weekend due to the weather. At the time of writing no other fixtures for the league have been fixed.

The times and dates have been fixed for the junior football championship, the first round will be played March 31 at 4.30 v Monageer-Boolavogue in Kilurin while the second round will be played on April 8 v Castletown B in Ballygarrett at 2 p.m.

The under-nine hurlers have been chosen as one of the teams to represent Wexford in Croke Park in April, it’s something that not many people in the parish have done so best of luck to the team.

There was a presentation last Saturday night in the Parish Hall of medals to the under-14 hurlers, under-16 hurlers and the minor hurlers. Great to see so many medals being handed out showing how well underage is going at the minute.

Thanks to Jason O’Leary, who cleared the car park of snow recently to make sure he arena could stay open.

We would love to know if there is any old memorabilia in the parish, old jerseys, old hurling balls, old medals etc as we would love to photograph these before they are lost to the ages. If so please email dexleary@gmail.com.

On this week 125 years ago, GAA was struggling in Wexford. There was a meeting held in the Sporting office for football clubs with only three clubs attending, park, Wexford Young Irelands, and Blackwater. They postponed the meeting to hopefully get more to attend but they lamented the fact that come March practice fields could not be got due to farmers needing their land. What’s surprising of course was that Blackwater football was short lived and they finished in 1888 so it was surprising to see them attend a football meeting.
