Division 3A side Fethard Rangers pulled off a big shock in the second round of the Wexford Volkswagen Cup as they overcame Premier Division outfit Corach Ramblers 2-1.

John Staples headed Ramblers in front on 20 minutes but Fethard responded immediately, with midfielder Joe Sutton firing home a 25-yard free-kick.

Rangers took the lead early in the second-half after Jean-Luc Tubritt chased a long ball forward and was taken down by the Corach goalkeeper for a penalty.

Tubritt dusted himself down and tucked away the spot-kick, and the seasiders managed to keep their lead intact for a surprise victory.

Division 4A leaders Glynn Barntown came agonisingly close to pulling off an upset, as they were beaten 6-5 on penalties by Division 1 high-flyers Rosslare Rangers after a 2-2 draw.

Chris Doyle fired the underdogs in front, but goals from Paul Culleton and Mark Furlong had Rangers 2-1 ahead by the interval.

However, Nigel Usher drew Glynn Barntown level just after the break, and they continued to push forward in droves in the second-half, forcing some fine saves out of the Rosslare Rangers goalkeeper.

Extra-time couldn’t separate the sides and Rangers prevailed in the shoot-out.
