Blackwater camogie club are having their annual bingo fundraiser on Good Friday night, March 30, in Blackwater Hall at 8.30 p.m. All are welcome, please come along to support our girls.

TIDY TOWNS

volunteers are needed for our annual Litter Lift in the village and approach roads. We are meeting on the bridge at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 2 (Bank Holiday Monday).

Please bring high-vis jackets, gloves and any litter pickers if you have any.

If anyone wants to join Blackwater Tidy Towns or just help out, we meet Tuesday and Saturday mornings on the bridge at 10 a.m. – all welcome.

GAA NEWS

Championship week is upon us again with the first round of the football. The lads face Monageer-Boolavogue this Saturday at 4.30 p.m. in Kilurin. The first round of the Intermediate Hurling Championship takes place on April 14 v St James in Kilurin. The intermediate hurlers defeated Monageer-Boolavogue recently in the league, winning 0-14 to 1-07. Lar Lacey getting on for the second half, news of his retirement was premature.

On Monday, April 2, our minor hurlers play the second round of the Premier Hurling Championship v HWH at 6 p.m. in Boola- bawn (Davidstown pitch).

Well done to Ciaran Cash, Liam Lynch and Rain Salmon, who have all made the under-14 Wexford Hurling team for the year ahead. Rian played corner back in the First year Leinster B Hurling final for Wexford CBS last Wednesday when they won the title. Ciaran played wing back on the St Peter’s College team who lost out to Good Council in the First year Leinster A final.

Congratulations to Denis ‘Toper’ Corrigan, who turned 60 last week.

Well done to Clodagh Whelan, who was part of the team that won the all-Ireland Junior B Title with Presentation Wexford recently.

Well done to the Scoil Naomh Bride, who won out of their group in the first round of the sevens hurling.

James Donoghue managed DCU to another Fresher all-Ireland title last week so congratulations to him and the hurling team.

Seán O’Brien and Declan Flanagan were the €200 club winners for February.

We would love to know if there is any old memorabilia in the parish, old jerseys, old hurling balls, old medals etc as we would love to photograph these before they are lost to the ages. If so please email dexleary@gmail.com.

130 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK: The county board were getting ready for the upcoming football county championship (Blackwater had entered a team) the ground at Crosstown was marked at 196 yards by 140 yards to be secured with pailing all around. A permanent stand was also to be erected and was said to be the most comfortable for onlookers. The paper stated it was great to see many gallant clubs join the ranks and that it was hoped with the stand we shallot miss a single man of the old guard who loved to patronise the Murrintown games and squabble about forfeit points.
