ALL-IRELAND GOLD

Congratulations to Murtha Doyle, Glynranny, and a former pupil of Boolavogue NS, who starred for the DCU Freshers’ Hurling team which defeated university of Limerick in Stradbally, Co. Laois on Wednesday night last. Playing in the half-forward line, he scored a vital goal in the 50th. minute of the game and added a crucial point in the 54th. minute to put paid to any hopes the UL side had of levelling the game. A late minute goal had UL trailing by a single point, and Murtha’s point sealed the victory for Éireann’s Hopes, the DCU GAA club.

SOCCER NEWS

The Youths’ team were out against Wexford Albion in the cup on St Patrick’s Day and were unfortunate to lose out by a single goal to a premier division side, suffering defeat for the first time this season. Playing into a strong wind, they put pressure on the Albion keeper a number of times, but it was Albion, who scored first. The visitors netted again soon afterwards, a corner kick, aided by the strong wind, curled into the top corner.

Shortly after the resumption, Jamie Dempsey-Doyle, connecting on a long range pass from Daire Swords deep in defence, reduced the deficit to 1-2. Albion stretched their lead to two goals only to have Jamie peg them back with a well taken free. From then on, Albion were forced into defence but despite having the bulk of possession, our lads never managed to score the equaliser they richly deserved. Player-of-the-match was Glenn McEvoy with Daire Swords and Jamie Dempsey-Doyle also starring.

The following day, Sunday, March 18, the ladies’ game versus Stoney Rovers was cancelled as was the ‘A’ team’s fixture away to Crossabeg and the ‘B’ team’s home game against Kiltealy.
