Frustration over lack of action on Doran’s Bridge
DESPITE a major public outcry, residents of Kiltealy have been left frustrated over a lack of action on a lethal junction at Doran’s Bridge, just outside the village. The crossroads has seen countless accidents over the past year and locals say that it’s only a matter of time before someone is killed there.
There were huge attendances at public meetings in Kiltealy on the matter and local councillors vowed to take action on the matter and bring it to the engineer to see what can be done. While residents were told that a new layout for the junction would cost too much money and may not be feasible at any point in the near future, at the February meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council it was announced that new signage was being designed to include flashing lights which would hopefully capture the attention of motorists and alleviate problems slightly.
However, weeks later, residents have bemoaned a lack of action on the junction and say that they have had no contact with the council, despite assurances that they would be updated.
‘ They haven’t really done anything here yet,’ said Chairman of the residents group Noel Armstrong. ‘ They’ve trimmed the hedges back a bit, which has helped a little bit, but other than that nothing has been done. The road surface is terrible so they can’t put markings down on it. We had a meeting with council officials and the engineer where we had a list of requests and suggestions which they took on board. They said they’d come back to us within a fortnight, but we’ve heard nothing.’
As well as the road surface being poor, the wall which stands between the road and the river is still partly demolished after a car hit it in one of the many incidents at the cross.
While Noel acknowledges that the recent extreme weather may have delayed things somewhat, he says residents in the area are growing increasingly frustrated by a lack of action on what has been the scene of many accidents in the past year.
