Night of celebration to mark 40 years of Duffry Rovers camogie
FORTY years of highs and lows on and off the pitch were reflected upon at the Holy Grail Recently as Duffry Rovers Camogie celebrated their 40th anniversary with a special get together.
Since it’s foundation in 1978, the club has gone on to enjoy considerable success and provide a great sporting and social outlet for the women of the local area and players, past and present were among the some 60 strong crowd at the Holy Grail in Enniscorthy to mark the landmark occasion.
Present on the night was the first the camogie club’s first Chairman Pat Jordan who spoke of some of the notable achievements on the pitch over the years as well as how great friendships had been formed through countless hours on the training pitch. He commented on all the youth in attendance, and in the club in general, and encouraged the women to keep playing as long as they could. He also mentioned how proud he was to see three club players lined out in the 2007 All-Ireland final, namely Deirdre and Louise Codd, and Bróna Furlong.
Pat then presented certificates to the 34 registered players from the three teams entered in 1977, as well as their management before the original founding committee cut a special birthday cake. Interestingly enough, the club was initially called Ballindaggin United and several from those days are still involved today.
‘It was a great night,’ said Deirdre Codd, who was one of those to come from the club and represent her county with distinction. ‘ There was a great mix of past players and it was great to catch up with so many people on the night. There were plenty of old war stories told of trips to A&E and that type of thing. We really owe so much to the first-ever committee, and those committees since, for putting in so much hard work, as without them we mightn’t have had the opportunity to play camogie within our three parishes’
A slideshow of old photographs recounted the success enjoyed by the club and its players over the years and there was also a look to the future as they look to grow even further and get more people involved, not only at under-age level, but senior too. The organisers wished to thank everyone who came along on the night.
