Trucker is released without charge
A TRUCK driver from County Wexford was released without charge from Garda custody at the weekend arising out of an alleged road rage incident that occurred on Friday evening, following which a man in his 50s died.
The trucker, who is also in his 50s, was arrested shortly before 8 p.m. on Friday after his articulated lorry was stopped by Gardai in the Butlersland area of New Ross. Two patrol cars were at the scene.
The driver was brought to Wexford Garda Station for questioning and remained there until he was released, without charge, at 8.55 p.m. on Saturday. Supt. Jim Doyle is leading the investigation and he told this newspaper yesterday that the alleged road rage incident occurred ‘on the way out of Rosslare Europort’, in the direction of Tagoat.
‘A man was subsequently arrested outside New Ross as a result of an alleged physical altercation that took place earlier,’ he said.
According to Supt. Doyle the altercation took place at around 6.40 p.m. and the deceased driver was found in his cab at 7 p.m., but he also said the earlier incident was not the cause of the man’s death. It’s believed he suffered a heart attack.
The road rage incident, the physical altercation, and the discovery of the truck drivers remains all took place within half-an-hour. The deceased man, a Romanian national, and the local driver, were working for two separate New Ross based companies. It’s also believed the local man, who is from the south of the county, was unaware of the events that occurred after he drove away from Rosslare and on towards New Ross.
A file on the matter is now being prepared for the office of the DPP.
