Two goals in two minutes seal win

- MICHAEL HEFFERNAN

HWH-BUNCLODY 3-7 ADAMSTOWN 0-13

TWO GOALS in as many minutes proved enough for HWH-Bunclody to shake off Adamstown in this Amber Springs/Ashdown Park Hotels Intermediate football championship Group B game in St. Patrick’s Park on Saturday.

After going in at the break with a one-point lead, the eventual victors looked to be cruising when they went ahead by double scores during a purple patch that saw them hit 2-2 within ten minutes of the re-start.

However, they failed to capitalise any further on this and were pushed all the way by a typically stubborn Adamstown side which accounted for the next six scores, reducing the deficit to just two points going into injury time.

In the end, there was just too much for the New Ross District side to do, and when a late effort by Cathal Doyle went between the posts there was only going to be one winner.

The result sees HWH-Bunclody take second spot while Adamstown are bottom of the group, but still have a game in hand.

The opening period was an evenly-fought contest with the sides level midway through the half, with Colum Feeney and Eoin Kelly looking sharp from placed balls for their respective teams.

Adamstown gained a slight advantage after Michael Furlong and Tony French put them two in front nearing half-time, but after the bounce of the ball deceived their defence, Eoin Kelly sneaked inside to finish with aplomb, giving HWH-Bunclody the edge at the break.

The first ten minutes of the new half saw all the damage done, with Eddie Dunbar finishing Peter Atkinson’s rebounded shot to the net just before the latter bagged one himself, with an excellently-executed drop kick hitting the roof of the net.

Adamstown must be given great credit for clawing their way back into things as it looked as if they were dead and buried, but in the end they had just too much to do and HWH-Bunclody were never going to let such a significant lead slip.
