Football fundraiser is a big hit

LADIES’ GAELIC FOOTBALL TALENT SHOW IN THE FERRYCARRIG HOTEL

- By ANNA HAYES

MORE THAN 150 people enjoyed a night of song, dance and recitation at the Ferrycarrig Hotel for the inaugural Wexford Ladies’ Gaelic Football Talent Show final.

Seventeen acts from all over the county took part in the competition, treating the audience to a very varied programme of performances from trad music to soulful singing, Irish dancing to comedic recitation. Pat O’Callaghan from Camross Drama Group acted as master of ceremonies for the night while Trisha Murphy and Ian Grey took on the difficult task of judging the acts.

The winner on the night was the trio of Irish dancers Laura McGuinnes, Laura Cash and Rachel Cash from Scoil Rince Aisling, representing St Brigid’s Blackwater GAA Club.

Singer Niamh Cullen from Adamstown was second, singing a version of Etta James’s ‘At Last’, while Adi Roche O’Leary from Bannow was third with her rendition of Tina Turner’s ‘Proud Mary’.

A spokesperson for the board explained that the funds raised would go towards the running of the ladies’ football county set-up. She added that they were delighted with the turnout and would consider running it as an annual fundraiser in the future, hoping that the momentum would build after a successful first year. She also expressed the board’s thanks to Stafford’s Bakery for their generous sponsorship of the event.
