Enniscorthy is a graveyard with lights – Jackser
FORMER COUNCILLOR CONFIRMS HIS INTENTION TO RUN IN NEXT ELECTION
A former member of Enniscorthy Town Council has called for more to be done to attract big businesses into Enniscorthy, while confirming that he intends to run for election to Wexford County Council next year.
Former Independent councillor Jackser Owens narrowly missed out on county council seat back in 2014, but he says that, at the moment, he intends to run again next year and has ‘never stopped campaigning’.
‘I’m campaigning ever day,’ he said. ‘At the moment, I would say that yes, I am running for election next year.
‘Now a lot could change between now and then, but if the Lord spares me I’d say it’s more than likely that I’ll run next year. Last time I missed out by 30 votes and there’s people on the council now that were eliminated on the first count last time around.’
High on Jackser’s agenda is attracting businesses and amenities to Enniscorthy.
‘Well let’s face it, Enniscorthy is like a graveyard with lights at the minute,’ he said. ‘It’s dead. Wexford is booming. Gorey is booming. We have no Penneys, no McDonalds, no cinema, no Tesco.
‘We need to have these in town instead of sending people 14 miles down the road. I was the only councillor who proposed Tesco come to Enniscorthy on the old Town Council and I couldn’t get one seconder. That’s on the record in County Hall!’
Jackser did commend The Riverside Park Hotel on reaching the milestone of 20 years in business last week, however, saying that it is the ‘finest hotel in Ireland for a wedding’ and ‘gives a lot of vital local employment to Enniscorthy’, however he says a lot more needs to be done to encourage business in the town.
