Flood relief plan ‘will be delivered’ for Enniscorthy

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

FOLLOWING the news of funding for a major flood defence scheme in Wexford town, Minister Paul Kehoe has moved to re-affirm his and the government’s commitment to the Enniscorthy Flood Defence Scheme. Minister Kehoe has vowed that the construction of the Enniscorthy scheme will take place next year.

After the announcement regarding flood defence in Wexford, Minister Kehoe said that €40million for the Enniscorthy scheme has already been ring-fenced and that Minister at the Office of Public Works, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran intended on paying another visit to the town to see how the money will be spent.

‘I know how anxious people in Enniscorthy are to see this project be followed through,’ Minister Kehoe said. ‘ This is completely separate from the announcement in Wexford town and Minister Moran has assured me it will be delivered upon.’

As part of the works, services and utilities along the promenade are being relocated this year, ahead of the full construction in 2019. The pressure was put on following yet another near miss with flooding in the wake of Storm Emma, however, Minister Moran says he remains 100% committed to the project.

An advanced programme to control and eradicate Japanese knotweed on the river bank is underway and will continue later this year and treatment of Himalayan Balsam will be carried out in July.

Minister Kehoe has promised that delivering the Flood Relief Scheme is among his top priorities, however, and that the announcement of a flood relief scheme further south will have no impact for the people of Enniscorthy.
