REWARDING EXCELLENCE AT ENNISCORTHY CBS!

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

THERE was a wonderful atmosphere of anticipation in the air at St Mary’s CBS as staff and students were joined by parents and friends of the school for their 2018 Awards Night. Principal Mr John Ryan welcomed everyone on the night and said that he was delighted to ‘pay tribute to our students who, through hard work, commitment and tenacity have achieved great academic results in the past year.’

He also stated the importance of lessons learned through extra-curricular activities, instilling qualities of ‘ teamwork, motivation, dedication, empathy and selflessness’ which he said were ‘equally as important for a fully rounded education’. Mr Ryan also wished the current crop of 6th years the very best in their exams and said that it was his hope that their time in St Mary’s CBS will have helped them to prepare for the world that awaits.

Special guest speaker on the night was past pupil and Wexford hurling legend Adrian Fenlon who attended the school from 1982 to 1987, playing for the school and winning a Leinster College’s medal at under 14 level in 1986. He was also unfortunate in that he was a member of a very unlucky U16 hurling team who were defeated in an All-Ireland Final in 1987, but that didn’t stop his progress and he went on to achieve legendary All-Ireland success with Wexford in 1996.

Adrian then spoke to the pupils about his exploits on and off the pitch before the awards were handed out. Firstly, Mr Ryan congratulated members of the student’s council and meitheal programme for all their hard work throughout the year.
