New route offers some spectacular scenery
CYCLISTS from across the South East are looking forward to getting stuck into a brand new cycling trail which takes in some of the most beautiful scenery in Wexford, along with neighbouring counties Carlow and Wicklow.
The Nine Stones Cycle Loop is a total of nearly 120km of a sign-posted cycle route, designed to provide a bit of a challenge for cyclists. On their way, they will encounter 1,600 metres of climbing, but they will be amply rewarded for their efforts with some absolutely stunning views - most notably of Sliabh Bhuí and the Nine Stones at the summit of Mount Leinster.
Wexford County Council Cycling Officer Frank Burke is encouraging all cycling enthusiasts to place the Nine Stones Cycle Loop firmly on their itinerary.
‘ The Nine Stones cycle route is aimed at cyclists that want a challenge with a difference,’ he said. ‘Indeed the M9 to Bunclody provides access to this cycle loop for other counties, while cyclists approaching Wexford from the north can also access the route via the M11 to Gorey.’
As well as stunning scenery, the loop takes in some fantastic points of interest and towns and villages as you travel through the heart of rural Ireland. Key locations include Bunclody, Ferns, Gorey and the beautiful Nine Stones at Mount Leinster. The route also takes in the picturesque villages of Kiltealy, Ballycanew, Clogh, Camolin and Carnew along the way.
Wexford County Council thanked their colleagues in Carlow and Wicklow councils for their cooperation on the project and gratefully acknowledged the funding of Healthy Ireland and the Department of Rural Affairs. Mapboards of the route will be erected in Bunclody and Gorey, but cyclists can start from any point along the way. For more information, visit www. wexfordcoco.ie/ninestones.
