Sadness over passing of popular Dr Gaynor

-

BUNCLODY and Wexford town were united in grief last week after news emerged of the passing of Dr William Gaynor who had served as a GP in the town for many years. A highly respected doctor and member of the community, tributes poured in over the weekend from the people of Bunclody who would have attended his practice over the years.

William was the beloved husband of the late Kay and the pair were said to have been united over their great love of music. They were married in 1952 in Dun Laoghaire and enjoyed a wonderful honeymoon afterwards to Majorca. When they returned, the pair spent their early years of marriage in the UK and at various locations around Ireland before they eventually settled in Bunclody where they reared their family of Angela, Miriam, Geraldine, Brendan, Paul, Sheila and the late Anthony.

Dr Gaynor was renowned for his gentle and patient manner and also immersed himself in the local community. Both he and his late wife were heavily involved in raising money for the local swimming pool and he also did great work in sending sick children to Lourdes.

When he retired around 1996, Dr Gaynor moved back to Wexford until he passed away in the loving care of the staff of Knockeen Nursing Home in Barntown, surrounded by his loving family.

‘He was a lovely quiet man and an excellent GP,’ said Bunclody councillor Barbara Anne Murphy. ‘He was very well thought of and respected in Bunclody and he and his late wife did a lot of work in the local community. He will be fondly remembered by lots of families in the local community here.’

William is predeceased by his darling wife Kay and beloved son Anthony. He is sadly missed by his children Angela, Miriam, Geraldine, Brendan, Paul and Sheila, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, sister-in-law Kathleen, nieces, nephews. His removal takes place from Kearney’s Funeral Home, Selskar Street, Wexford, today (Tuesday) at 11.30 a.m. to the Church of the Immaculate Conception Rowe Street for funeral mass at 12 noon. Burial afterwards in St Ibar’s Cemetery, Crosstown.
