Plenty of nostalgia as Vintage Tea Party takes over Athenaeum
WHILE the Athenaeum in Enniscorthy is historic enough itself, it was like taking a step back in time as you entered it’s large hall recently as the venue hosted a ‘Brooklyn’ themed vintage afternoon tea party in aid of the Irish Wheelchair Association.
The event saw a wonderful turnout with over 100 people arriving on the day, many of whom donned their finest period costumes of the 40s and 50s. The event celebrated a wonderfully exciting time when the film took over the streets of the town with actors such as Domhnall Gleeson and Saorise Ronan strolling about, and there was even a cardboard cut-out of the latter so that people could snap a photo with a film star. Tunes were played on a vintage record player as afternoon tea was served on the finest of China delph, with some delicious treats on offer. Music was then provided by John Kenny and Marie Devereux and people even made use of the floor space to indulge in a little bit of dancing.
The event was the brainchild of sisters Martina Freeman and Liz Kenny and they were blown away by the support they received, with all money raised going to the IWA. It was a wonderful trip down memory lane for some, who would have attended dances in the Athenaeum over the years and one lady even recounted how she had met her husband there. The sisters thanked everyone who got involved, particularly local businesses who had so generously provided sponsorship and there have now even been calls to make it an annual event
