AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

HARD work and dedication over the course of the academic year was rewarded last week as Coláiste Bríde hosted its annual awards ceremony. The awards aimed to acknowledg­e the wonderful efforts of students who had really shone in both academic and sporting fields throughout the year, as well as in all aspects of school life.

Principal Ms Kiera O’Sullivan congratula­ted the students on their successes throughout the year and particular­ly wished exam classes the very best of luck as they get set for the Junior and Leaving Certs. She also welcomed the special guest speaker on the night, Helen Hall, who recalled fondly her time spent in the classrooms of Coláiste Bríde and enjoyed seeing just how far the school had come.

First up were the Junior Academic Awards. The first year academic winners were: 1A Tara Whelan; 1B Sarah Walsh; 1C Nancy Ennis and 1D Sadhbh Ryan. This was followed by the second year academic winners who were - 2A Emma Louise Doran; 2B Nadine Power; 2C Katie Hennessy; 2D Emma Murphy; 2E Amelia Morycka. Third year academic winners were 3A Leona Buckley; 3B Amy Murphy; 3C Eabha Farrell; 3D Sadhbh Murphy. The award for outstandin­g Junior Cert Results in 2017 went to Ellen O’Gorman.

Coláiste Bríde’s fine musical tradition was regarded as the overall award for Outstandin­g Contributi­on to Music was presented to Emily White, before the ceremony progressed to Senior Academic Awards.

The 5th year winners of academic awards were: Tunmise Akinyemi, Ashley Bolger, Amy Carney, Colleen Coughlan, Aoife Devereux, Leah Donovan, Lystus Ebosele, Alice Fenlon, Amy Long, Lily Mahon, Patrycia Mazurcak, Katelyn McVeigh, Karen Murphy, Sarah O’Dowd, Mackenzie O’Leary, Jessica Roche, Grace Shanahan, Isabel Sinnott, Caithlin Stamp, Rayanne Torey, Sarah Whitty.

6th year winners were: Jennifer Allen, Louise Butler, Cody Byrne, Aoife Cloke Rochford, Megan Dillon, Siobhan Fanning, Asia Fresilli, Niamh Furlong, Alanta Grigaliuna­ite, Saoirse Hughes, Nicole Kavanagh, Michelle Kiely, Sinead Kinsella, Katie Lafferty, Rebecca Morris-Dwyer, Lauren Murphy, Katelynn O’Connor, Lauren O’Leary, Áine O’Sullivan, Ciara Raleigh- Carley, Chloe Rooney, Eimear Ryan, Sylvia Sinnott, Megan Stacey, Rebecca Tobin, Karen Walsh, Shona Wilson, Vanessa Zelek.

The award for Outstandin­g Leaving Cert Results in 2017 went to Orla Healy who is now studying Biomedical Science in UCD.

This year’s sports awards were presented Yvonne Hennebry in First Year, Kellyanne Dempsey in Second Year, Loren Doyle in Third Year, Amy Long in Fifth Year and Sarah Figgis in Sixth Year. The award for Overall Sports Personalit­y of the Year went to Anais Curran. Tribute was also paid to the soccer team who won the Leinster U19 Soccer Championsh­ips under the guidance of coach Nicola Sinnott.

Gaisce Medals for 2017 were handed out to Suzi Byrne, Faith Gardener, Saoirse Hughes (Silver), Caoilin Kavanagh (Silver), Róisín Kinsella (Silver), Lily Mahon, Rebecca O’Brien, Lucy O’Leary, Eimear O’Shea, Kathleen Redmond and Katie Roche. Bronze Gaisce Medals for 2018 were awarded to Anna Burke, Courtney Cleary, Mairead Crean, Alannah Dobbs, Rachel Doyle, Julia Dziadek, Alisha Grant, Caoimhe Kirwan, Kate Maher, Caoimhe Mc- Donald, Ciara McNally, Alice Medcalf, Catherine Moitie, Megan O’Rourke, Alicia St. Claire Johnson, Chloe Thorpe, Nicole Walsh and Aoife Whelan.

Marking an outstandin­g contributi­on to the school community, the People of the Year Awards were given to Ciara Lewis in First Year, Hannah Byrne in Second Year, Cora Dobbs in Third Year, Fatimah Guetar in Fifth Year and Aoife Cloke Rochford in Sixth Year.

The Mercy Cup was presented to Third Year student Precious Obasohan, while the Ceist Award went to Fifth Year Molly Jordan. Singled out for particular praise also were this year’s Meitheal Leaders who did such a great job integratin­g new students into the school community, and the Head Girls of 2017/18 - Chloe Davis, Sarah Doyle, Queva Flynn, Sinéad Kinsella, Ruth Lambert, Emma Moorehouse and Chloe Wilson.

Then came the all important award for Senior Student of the Year. Ms O’Sullivan said that the standard was extremely high and it was difficult to choose just one winner from the short-list. Nominated for the award were Chloe Davis, Sarah Doyle, Aoife Dunne, Queva Flynn, Saoirse Hughes and Katy Walsh. With everyone on the edge of their seats, Aoife Dunne was eventually read out as the winner to rapturous applause.

To conclude the event, Ms O’Sullivan congratula­ted all the winners on their achievemen­ts and wished the departing students all the very best for the future.
