The sun shone brightly on Sunday, May 13, for our first major of the year, the Captain’s (Jackie Lynn) prize to the ladies. The fine weather contribute­d to some great scoring and a very enjoyable day was had by all!

The 18-hole singles stableford competitio­n sponsored by Carrig Donn took place on Thursday, May 17, in bright sunshine.

Results: 1, Sally O’Neill (20), 36 points (back nine); 2, Tracy Ryan (28), 36 points; 3, Trina Walsh (19), 34 points; gross, Helen Robinson (8), 25 points; Senior, Theresa Kehoe (16), 33 points.

The nine-hole competitio­n was won by Mary Rackard (19), 18. Nearest the pin was Ger Draper, 30 cm. A total of 64 ladies played.

Next week’s competitio­n is an 18-hole fourball sponsored by the Haven Pharmacy.

The draw for the J.J. Devereux Cup took place on Thursday. The sheet for the first round matches will be placed in the locker room this week.

Well done to Theresa Kehoe (silver medal winner 2017) and Deirdre Colfer (bronze medal winner 2017) who played in Headfort Golf Club on Wednesday in the national medal finals.

Please note that the Australian Spoons qualifier has been re-scheduled to Monday, June 11, due to an inter-club match on the original date.

Congratula­tions to the victorious Pierce Purcell team which took the honours in the final on Sunday week, and good luck to all teams in the inter-club matches in the coming weeks.

On May 23 and 26 there is an open singles for ladies and gents.

On May 29 the P.G.A. Tankard singles stableford will be sponsored by club profession­al Jamie O’Sullivan, with a Pro Shop fashion show at 8.30 p.m. followed by the presentati­on of prizes at 9.30 p.m. - not to be missed.

Advance notice of a mixed fourball event on Friday, June 1 - a ten-hole shotgun starting at 5 p.m. on holes 1-4 and 13-18. Members’ entry is €15, and visitors’ €25, which includes competitio­n entry, prize-giving and a main course in the Terrace Restaurant. Book by calling the Pro Shop on 05391-32032.

The Senior cup team played wonderful golf in New Forest on Saturday but were sadly beaten by The Heath, the All-Ireland winners of 2017. Thanks to the team members, caddies and supporters, and better luck next year.

It’s a busy and exciting month for our teams and sup- porters!This Thursday, May 24, the Challenge team play Wicklow in Enniscorth­y at 2 p.m.

On Saturday, May 26, the Boyne trophy versus Waterford gets under way at 2.28 p.m. with two pairs at home and three away in Waterford, and the Junior Cup meet Wexford in New Ross on May 28.

It’s the time of year for the Rosslare Golf Club kids’ summer camp, running weekly from July 3 to the last week in August with training sessions every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at a cost of €35 per child per week.

ROSSLARE

Derek Evans (10) was the winner of the singles competitio­n in Rosslare on Sunday week with a fine score of 40 points.

He had a very steady round which included seven bogies, nine pars and birdies at the eighth and twelfth in halves of 21 and 18 points.

He won on the breakdown from Seán Bates (21) who had a great front nine of 22 points. Ian Lynch (0) had birdies at the eighth, 13th, 15th and 18th in a two under par round of 70 to finish third on 38 points, with Stephen Healy (9) fourth on 38 points.

Mark Mullen (0) had two birdies to win the gross with 37 points, and Jim Doyle (10) won the veterans on the same score. Declan Burns (12) was fifth, also on 38 points.

Saturday singles: 1, Stephen Healy (10), 38 points; 2, Patrick Quinn (18), 37 points; 3, Pat Rossiter (8), 36 points; 4, Dave McGee (8), 35 points.

Burrow twelve holes: 1, Michael Odlum, 27 points; 2, Eamonn Mullen, 26 points.

The open singles on Wednesday was won by Ian Lynch (0) with a one over par round of 35 points which included birdies at the sixth, twelfth and 13th. He won on the breakdown from Mark Mullen (+1) who was around in level par.

Third, also on 35 points, was Cormac Pettitt (12). Kevin Collins (5) won the gross with 29 points, and Declan Burns (11) was the veterans’ winner with 30 points.

Fixtures: Saturday, May 26, singles; Sunday, May 27, medal on blue course, veterans (over 65) on green course.

WEXFORD

With the good weather and ideal playing conditions, last week we saw some excellent scores returned in the various club competitio­ns.

Tuesday’s 18-hole singles was won by Jonathan Walsh with a great score of 44 points. Second place went to John Purdy with 37 points, and the over-70s section was won by the evergreen Terry Lyons with 34 points.

Wednesday’s competitio­n was a 14-hole open fourball event. The winning combinatio­n was the youthful Brad Cohen and the very experience­d John McNicholas with 34 points.

Second place went to Noel Martin and John Byrne with 33 points (back seven). Third place was filled by Enda Lambert and Seán Kenny, also on 33 points.

Our new Friday evening competitio­n played over nine holes was won by our hard-working Honorary Secretary, Kieran Purcell, with 21 points.

The Trinity Motors-sponsored 18 holes fourball was played over Friday and Saturday. Scoring was hot with the winners, Craig Healy and Adrian O’Keeffe, recording 45 points (back nine). Second place went to Chris Grant and Roy Sexton, also on 45 points.

Saturday’s best score prize went to Ollie Dempsey Jnr. and James Morrissey with 44 points. The Trinity Motors customers’ prize was won by Lar Gainfort and Darren Robinson with 42 points (back three). Congratula­tions to James Morrissey who recorded a hole-in-one on the 13th.

Please note that the prize-giving for this competitio­n is on Sunday, June 3.

Sunday saw the first Talbot Collection monthly medal competitio­n played, with Seán Flood running out the winner. Full results of this competitio­n will appear next week.

The much-anticipate­d draw for the annual Howlin Cup was made last week. There are some interestin­g pairings, with Chairman Tom wondering if Kenny Walsh can muzzle the Jack Russell.

Pre-tournament favourite Maurice Delaney will take on Denis Lehane, and young gun Shane Jenkins will meet director of golf Nicky Reville. All matches in the first round must be played by June 2.

We send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to John Cronin who has invested in a new hip in an attempt to improve his golf.

The latest Joker winner was Peter Byrne. A Joker draw is held every Sunday night. The cost is €2 with all proceeds going to course developmen­t.

BUNCLODY

DONOHOE’SSOCIETY

Donohoe’s Society played Blackwater on Sunday, with 19 players in total.

First with a score of 39 points was Lar Morrissey, and second was Jim Ryan, on his first game back this year, also with 39 points. Third was Willie Nolan on the same score.

The birdie money was won by Sam Farnan with two birdies, and the yellow ball winning team featured Trevor Murphy, Cha O Brien, Martin Collins and Pat Morrissey.

We play Enniscorth­y Golf Club next Saturday, teeing off at 9.30 a.m. Please be there by 8.45 a.m.

ENNISCORTH­YLADIES

The weekly competitio­n was the Australian spoons and was sponsored by Westgate Design.

Results: 1, Helene Daly (24) and Helen D’Eathe (27), 25, 43 points; 2, Louise Roe (35) and Breda Coffey (36), 35, 40 points (back nine); gross, Nicola Jacob (13) and Ann Harvey (14), 13, 25 points; nine-hole qualifier, Anne Delaney, 15 points.

Next week’s competitio­n is sponsored by Helen’s Fashions and is a team of two event. Helen is also hosting a fashion show on Tuesday, May 29, after the presentati­on at 9 p.m.

The ladies’ open Seniors’ competitio­n was played on Thursday, sponsored by Aideen’s Hair Solutions.

Results: overall, Sheila McGrath (38), 40 points; Cat. A, Helen D’Eathe (27), 35 points; Cat. B, Mary Breen (24), 39 points; Cat. C, Margaret Crotty (24), 37 points.

The Senior Cup team played Tullamore in New Forest on Saturday and unfortunat­ely were not victorious.

The Challenge team play Waterford Castle in New Ross on May 25, and the Boyne Cup team play Courtown on May 26, home and away.

The Senior foursomes play Wexford in New Ross on Sunday, May 27, and the Junior Cup team play Mount Juliet in Bunclody on Monday, May 28.

COURTOWNLA­DIES

Tuesday started off a lovely morning, the first in a long, long time, but the afternoon returned to what we have become used to: rain and plenty of it.

Neverthele­ss, Courtown ladies took to the course to play for the Giffney Shoes prize. John Giffney of Giffney Shoes has been sponsoring for some years now and it is always a hotly-contested competitio­n. The course was playing long and difficult so the winners really earned their prizes.

Results: 1, Frances Sinnott (26), 32 points; 2, Denise Kavanagh (12), 31 points; 3, Catherine Quinn (18), 30 points (countback); Cat. A, Sarah Donnellan (7), 27 points; Cat. B, Mairéad Sunderland (20), 30 points; Cat. C, Mary Cooper (30), 29 points.

The nine-hole competitio­n was won by Theresa Poole (36) with 17 points. Congratula­tions to all our winners.

Sunday week saw Mona Moynihan and the Revive Active team take on Arklow in the first round. Congratula­tions to Courtown ladies who earned a hard-won victory.

The Junior foursomes play their next round in Coollattin against Castlecome­r on Wednesday. Good luck to all the teams representi­ng the club.

COURTOWN

After only a short stay with us, we sadly say farewell to our club manager, Roger Yates. Roger is leaving us to take up a position overseas and we wish him well in the future.

He leaves the club in a very strong position, having implemente­d many changes to all aspects of managing the club.

Unfortunat­ely, some of our run of good luck came to an end on Sunday when our Duggan Cup team lost out to Woodenbgid­ge. Our Barton Cup team will, however, be out on Thursday and as usual we wish them luck in their next round.
