Seventh U-19 loss on trot

-

JAMES QUINN’S side continue to prop up the rest in the SSE Airtricity Under-19 Southern Elite League table after their seventh loss in a row since the season started at the R.S.C. on Sunday.

The Ferrycarrig Park boys have now conceded 28 goasl and scored just two on their way to the worst start of any side in club history.

This game against Waterford was a reasonable chance for Wexford to get off the slide. Their hosts are no great shakes themselves, with eight points from their six games coming into the south-east derby.

However, what the Blues were was big and physical through the centre of the team, with the defence imposing and dominant.

Wexford looked to work the ball out wide, in particular to Adham Masood, but apart from the winger’s contribution they failed to find any cutting edge.

Wexford started brightly enough and Masood saw an early effort deflected behind for a corner that came to nothing.

However, Waterford took the lead with their first real attack when Colm Whelan looped a nice ball to Seán Roche and he volleyed over Colum Feeney to the net.

With Masood pinging crosses into the box as the half wore on, Wexford still had some hope. Yet it was the hosts who were next to test a ‘keeper when Jack O’Donnell broke through and forced the visiting stopper into a block.

Just before the break Wexford created a great chance. Once again it was Masood as his cross found its way to Yaw Aboagye.

The big centre-forward got his shot away but it flew up and over the crossbar from just inside the area.

Buoyed by that opportunity, Wexford started the second on the front foot. Aboagye turned provider in the 53rd minute for Masood but his left-footed effort failed to trouble Paul Martin in the Waterford goal.

Larkin fired wide for the hosts after a mazy run before Feeney was forced to tip a Colm Whelan shot over just before the hour mark.

With the game heading into the final quarter, Aboagye won possession back for Wexford. He fed Vinny Quinlan but his shot from the edge of the area was saved by Martin.

Former North End youngster Kallum Broaders hit the post for Waterford with a curling effort in the 78th minute, but the hosts did wrap up the win when Justin Croke beat Seán Murphy, avoided Ger Murray’s lunge and fired home to wrap up the points.

Wexford host Bray Wanderers next Sunday in their final game before the mid-season break.
