‘This win is the stepping stone that we needed’

-

GOREY RANGERS manager Ben Casserly unsurprisingly wore a smile as wide as the nearby River Slaney after watching his charges deservedly win the Wexford Volkswagen Cup final at Ferrycarrig Park on Sunday.

He was fulsome in his praise for the warriors on the pitch, who left no stone unturned to ensure the cup was returning to the north county town for the first time in 54 years.

‘From the goalkeeper right up the top of the pitch I thought we were very organised, very solid. We kept Rovers at bay, which was our biggest fear because they score lots and don’t concede many. It was a good solid performance all round. At the end of the day I think the best team won,’ he said.

Casserly was delighted with the application of his players on the day and believes their success is just rewards for the efforts the squad have put in during a long campaign.

‘Defensively we were very good, which you have to be against a team like Rovers, and we’re delighted with the way the team performed overall. The lads have worked very hard all season and it’s great that we’re finishing the season with a cup,’ he said.

The manager believes this won’t be the last piece of silverware winging its way to Ramstown in the coming years, and reckons Sunday’s success could be a pivotal moment for the club, pushing them on to even greater things.

‘This win is the stepping stone that we needed. We’re now winners. That’s all these boys needed; to believe they can win things. We’ve done it so the next step is the league,’ he said.
