REMEMBER 1798.

On May 27, 1798, the Battle of Oulart Hill was fought and won by the rebels led by Fr John Murphy of Boolavogue and this memorable event has long been commemorated. Down through the years various monuments have been erected locally, culminating with the internationally acclaimed Tulach a’ tSolais that was opened on the Hill itself in 1999 to com- memorate the bicentenary of the Rising. Renowned architect, Ronald Tallon and internationally acclaimed sculptor, Michael Warren were responsible for the revolutionary design.

This year, the anniversary of the Battle is being marked by a short guided tour of the area, taking in St Mochua’s Chapel, Mise Éire Monument, The house of stories, Tulach a tSolais and a return to the community centre for refreshments. Special guests on the day will Michael Warren and Michael Tallon, son of the architect.

In St Mochua’s they will unveil the certificate won by Tulach a’tSolais as runner-up for the Triennial Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI), the most coveted prize in Irish architecture. The special guests will also sign Leabhar an Abhalloirt at Tulach a’tSolais. Events will start at S Mochua’s at 2 p.m. and conclude around 4.30 p.m. All are welcome this Sunday, May 27.
