WORK ON NEW PARK GROUNDS TO A HALT

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

ALTHOUGH very near completion, work has ground to a halt on Enniscorthy’s newest town park which is to link Convent Road with Irish Street. It is understood that the project is yet another victim of the collapse of UK construction giants Carillion.

District Manager Liz Hore said that the project was 90% finished and was ‘ about two weeks’ away from opening, but now it could take some time for the project to be completed and the gates to be opened to the public in the wake of financial difficulties. Ms Hore outlined that Carillion had appointed the Sammon Group on the project, who in turn had appointed Crawfords. However, this company, she said, has now entered receivership, leaving things somewhat up in the air for the new town park.

The park is said to have cost in excess of €180,000 and was almost ready to go at the time of the collapse. Winding pathways linking Convent Road and Irish Street appear almost finished and quite a bit of planting had also been done. However, things have somewhat ground to a halt now, open-endedly.

‘We’re due to get an update this week,’ Ms Hore said. ‘We’re hopeful of finding some kind of resolution and getting everything finished and ready to open ASAP.’

Ms Hore also said it was unlikely that the collapse would cost the council much money, as the project was already 90% complete and it is hoped the matter will be resolved quickly.
