Colourful cast launch Uptown Girl

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

THERE was huge excitement and a flurry of activity at The Riverside Park Hotel as Rathnure Panto Society gathered for a huge and colourful launch of their summer musical - ‘Uptown Girl’.

Since the group’s staging of ‘ Torn Dreams’ back in 2010, they have continued their run of original musicals, taking hits from across the decades and producing some unforgettable stories. Now with their ninth musical, the group are taking a trip back in time to the leg warmers, shoulder pads and bright colours of the awesome 80s!

The play tells the story of two girls - Rita, a poor hard-working shoemaker struggling to raise her family after their parents passed away, and Carol, a rich, sophisticated girl who becomes a World Irish Dancing Champion. Both girls fall for a local garage boy Mickey and as their paths cross during the difficult recession, each character, with the help of a thumping 80s soundtrack, has to rise above it.

So if you rocked to Sweet Child of Mine, felt crestfallen on a Manic Monday, or cheesed it out with Sister Sledge and Frankie, then this is the show for you. All profits will also go directly towards The Hope Cancer Support Centre and Wexford Hospice.

The show runs for 6 nights - June

15, 17, 20, 21, 22 and 24 at 7.45 p.m. nightly. For more details or tickets, call the box office on 0870687801 or 0876954112 or visit the Facebook page.
