CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!
MORE than 250 cyclists from all over the country converged on Bellefield GAA Complex recently as they put the pedal to the metal and took on Slaney Cycling Club’s Mount Leinster Challenge.
Over the last 15 years, the event has carved out a wonderful reputation on the cycling circuit nationally and sees people come from all over to take on some leg-wobbling climbs, but with the pay-off of some of the most spectacular views in Wexford.
This year’s event saw a great attendance yet again, with riders travelling from as far as Northern Ireland.
‘ There was a great atmosphere and everyone was up for a challenge,’ said organiser Rob Webster. ‘We’re going the bones of 15 years at this stage and thankfully the race has really been put on the cycling map. Conditions were perfect on the day. It was lovely and sunny. It was quite warm getting up the hills, but there was a nice breeze to cool them down as well.
‘We were delighted with how things went and the main thing, obviously, was that everyone got back safely with no major incidents along the way.’
This year saw three routes as part of the challenge – a 65km, a 105km and a 145km – with most people opting for the longer ones. The event was well marshalled and Rob thanked everyone who volunteered their time to make the event such a success.
Special thanks were also reserved for sponsors Nolan Transport, who have been there since the start.
