AN INSPIRATIONAL TALK AT BUNCLODY SCHOOL AWARDS

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

SOME of the best and brightest in the school community were honoured at Bunclody Vocational College last week as the school hosted its annual awards day. The awards reflected an enormous amount of work undertaken by students and staff over a busy year and ranged from academic and class awards to JCSP, Gaeltacht scholarships and merit and enterprise awards.

Guest of honour at the ceremony was Anna May McHugh, who has been the driving force of the Ploughing Championships for the past 66 years. She spoke of the importance of hard work, teamwork and determination, as well as how she had to overcome a lot of prejudice being a ‘woman in a man’s world’ in the 1970s.

Other guests on the day included Cllr Kathleen Codd-Nolan, chairperson of the board of management, and Stella Keogh and Mary Hogan, of the Credit Union, which sponsors the Junior and Senior Students of the Year.

A new award was presented this year in the form of the Nellie Foley Perpetual Trophy, in memory of the much loved home economics teacher who passed away last year. Her family donated a beautiful glass trophy to be awarded to a Junior Cert who had shown excellence in home economics and Breda Cushen was the first winner.

Principal Jay Murphy praised the whole student body for their hard work throughout the year and stressed the importance of attendance and playing a part in school life.

He thanked the parents’ council and the board of management for all their work and announced that the forthcoming multi-million euro extension of the school is at ‘an advanced stage’.

He also took the opportunity to wish outgoing students the very best in their future endeavours.
