Wexford schools get 25 new SNAs

- By BRENDAN KEANE

SCHOOLS ACROSS County Wexford are to get 25 additional Special Needs Assistants from the beginning of the new academic year in September, with hours divided all over the county.

According to Minister Paul Kehoe, who described the news as being great for the county, the allocation is part of the delivery of 800 new SNA posts nationwide from September with a further 140 expected to be allocated before Christmas.

The numbers represent a seven per cent increase on last year and the Government says it’s being done to meet the level of demand.

Minister Kehoe said children with special educational needs in Wexford should be given every possible support.

He said the allocation means every child with special needs will receive the assistance necessary to reach their potential.

‘[SNAs] in Wexford have continued to play a vital role in helping children with special educational needs,’ Minister Kehoe told this newspaper.

He said the extra resources will ensure that every child that needs access to SNA support throughout County Wexford will receive it.

Following implementation of the allocation there will be 15,000 Special Needs Assistants working in schools across the country.

Minister Kehoe said the Government invests €524m in such support annually and that SNAs play a key role in the education system.

It’s expected that the National Council for Special Education will notify the relevant schools of their allocation for the school year. Details of the allocations will also be published on the website www.ncse.ie.
