AWARDS DAY AT MEÁNSCOIL GHARMAN, ENNISCORTHY Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí
The atmosphere was electric at Meánscoil Gharman in Brownswood recently as the school community gathered for their annual awards ceremony. Prizes were awarded to students for a variety of different achievements ranging from academic excellence to sporting endeavours, science and music successes and a range of national competitions that the students excelled in.
Two of the most significant and prestigious awards each year are the schools ‘Spiorad na Scoile’ School Spirit Award and ‘Duais na Gaeilge’, the Irish Award. This year’s winners were David Mulligan and Róisín De Rúit and they were over the moon to have been chosen. The pair were described as: ‘ Two sixth year students who have been exceptional examples to the entire school community throughout their time in Meánscoil Gharman’ and were wished all the very best for the future.
A number of successes in national competition were noted during the ceremony. Chloe Ní Fhortúin agus Róisín Ní Bhuilgéir won the Post Primary Junior Cycle Award in the One Good Idea competition for their project which encouraged people to reduce their carbon footprint and purchase local produce. The pair will now be working with a graphic designer and will have their idea displayed on billboards across the country.
Meánscoil Gharman students also had great success at this year’s Scifest Awards with Conn Caomhánach agus Con Ó Meachair winning Best Overall Project. The boys will compete in the Marino Conference Centre next November for a trip to the Intel Science Competition in Arizona. They will be working with Dr Karen Daly in Teagasc this summer who will assist them with their research.
Music students from the school won this year’s Scléip Best Singing Group, with two music students being recognised as they won a music competition at the Oireachtas i Mí na Samhna and will be appearing on the 2FM Ceol 2018 Album that will be released in September. Nóra Moran and Jade Buttle will be sharing the album track list with the likes of Wheatus and Macklemore to name but a few, with their very own composition ‘Fúil na nÓg’.
Sporting achievements across a variety of disciplines including swimming, sailing, surf life saving, horse riding, soccer, rugby, camógaíocht, iománaíocht agus Gaelic football were also recognised at the ceremony, with pride of place given to the Under 14 camógaíocht champions.
Principal Norah Harpur spoke of how proud she was of the students and how far the school itself has come over the past ten years. She thanked the staff for their continued dedication and wished the outgoing students the very best of luck in their exams and as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.
