Pádraig produces big throws

THE IRISH Life Health A.A.I. Games took place at Morton Stadium.

Heavy showers through the afternoon meant less than ideal conditions for some of the events.

Notwithsta­nding this, there were some great performanc­es by Wexford athletes.

In the throws, Pádraig Hore of Taghmon had an impressive series of 40+ metre throws in the discus (1.75 kg.). His best effort of 43.71m secured the win.

Pádraig was second in the Senior shot putt with 12.51m.

Emma Owens of St. Paul’s had a big throw in the women’s hammer, winning with 45.53m.

D.M.P’s Lystus Ebosele had double success, winning the women’s shot putt (11.72m) and the discus (38.65m).

Emma Owens added a silver to her earlier gold as she came second in the discus, with Marguerite Furlong of D.M.P. in third place.

The 2018 Leinster Schools Senior 100m and 200m champion, David McDonald of Menapians, was an impressive winner of the 200m, dipping below the 21-second barrier, clocking a time of 20.93 seconds.

Clubmate Aaron Tierney-Smith ran a time of 22.63 seconds while Danny Roe of D.M.P. ran 25.43 seconds.

McDonald then went on to win the 400m, smashing through the 49 seconds barrier with a time of 48.58s.

Behind him were Menapians duo, Shaun Donohue (50.25s) and Aaron Tierney-Smith (52.09s).

In the women’s 200m, Phil Healy of Bandon, who is coached by Wexford man Shane McCormack, ran a time of 23.11 seconds, one of the fastest ever for the distance by an Irish woman.

In the 100m, Michael Deady of Menapians ran 11.79s, while Danny Roe of D.M.P. ran 12.48.

Conor Gaffney of Menapians finished fifth in the 400m hurdles in a time of 58.12s.
