Bree-Davidstown Community Games members Michael Roche, David O’Leary and Gavin O’Connor won gold medals at the National Community Games under-14 Debating Finals in the university of Limerick on Saturday, May 26. Eight teams took part in the competition.
The competition began with the Bree-Davidstown team successfully opposing the motion ‘This house believes that children under-14 should not use social media’ against Offaly in the quarter final. Next the local team, proposing the motion ‘This house believes that people should be fined for not recycling’, came out on top against a strong Kildare team. In the final debate of the day, Michael, Gavin and David opposed the motion ‘This house believes that Ireland should give more money to poor countries’ against a Clare team. It was a wonderful performance by the three boys from the Davidstown area which earned them the gold medals.
This team had qualified for the national finals, at the end of April, by defeating Castlebridge Crossabeg in the county final on home territory in Davidstown National School opposing the motion ‘This house believes that vending machine should be banned in Irish schools’.
Taking part in this county final were Michael, Gavin and Shane Jordan with David as sub. Shane was unavailable to participate in the national finals due to a family communion. The team was coached by Clare Doyle.
