GAA NEWS

The underage players of out local club collected what they hope is their first trophy of the year on Wednesday the 30th. of May by beating Kilanerian in the Rackard League district final in Ferns. Afer an enthralling encounter, they triumphed by 4-6 to 2-10. The boys and their parents would like to thank Ms Richardson from Boolavogue NS nad Ms Doran from Monageer N.S. for all their hard work and dedication in preparing the boys for the competition and games.

The previous evening the under-13 hurlers had beaten Liam Mellows by 5-9 to 2-9 in a tough, physical game. Goals late in the first half helped them into a onepoint lead at the break, despite having been outplayed from most of the half. Brilliant play from Bobby Codd, Charlie Donnelly, Euan Pender and Christopher Kelly helped them win the game. Euan’s skill between the posts was vital as the Liam Mellows’ players tried to regain the lead.

JUNIOR ‘B’ HURLING

The Junior ‘B’ encounter between our lads and Rapparees was the stuff of legend, with a final score of 2-19 to 0-31 in favour of the Enniscorthy town side giving some idea of the intensity of the play. Training and preparation for this game has been so intense that it is rumoured that one of the players invested in a foam roller. The Rapps lead for most of the first half, but accurate shooting from Niall O’Loughlin, Conall Nolan and James Gahan hauled them back. The town side pulled ahead again and lead convincingly by 0-15 to 0-8 at the break.

Immediately after the restart, Niall found the net and aided by the breeze, we were soon only two points adrift. Again, the Rapps opened a substantial gap only to have a James Gahan goal and some fine freetaking by Colm McGannon reduce the deficit to two points once again. What they saw as a harsh free against Keith Swaine unsettled our lads and the Rapparees took advantage to slot over five fine points to no reply. Both teams served up thrilling entertainment and in the end the Rapps deserved to win the titanic tussle.

Team: Darren Millar, Pádraig Stafford, Barry Millar, Keith Swaine, Colin Hawkins, Peadar Lacey, Adrian O’Loughlin, Conall Nolan, Arran Breslin, Colm McGannon, Niall O’Loughlin, James Gahan, Cathal O’Leary, Eugene Breslin, Micheál Stafford.

SOCCER NEWS

On Thursday night, May 31, the under-14 girls were away to Bridge Rovers in their second last league game of the season. Sophie Kirwin carved throught the defence early in play to set up Emerson Doran for one of her signature spectacular scores. Rovers were not fazed by this and attacked relentlessly only to have Collette Mythen pull off some splendid saves to deny them all the way throught the fist half.

But in the second half, from the kick off, Bridge scored and what had been an energetic game became totally intense. Again and again we attacked but could not score and again and again Collette denied Rovers the winning goal. Collette’s skill helped our girls collect a very valuable point which means that if they win their final game against New Ross Celtic, they will be crowned league champions.
