Two important competitio­ns were played in Rosslare over the past week. On Sunday week, the qualifying round of the golfer of the year was played with the matchplay concluding on Saturday, the same day as the Kerlogue Cup mixed foursomes was played.

Sixteen pairs went through to the matchplay which will be played during July.

G.O.Y. qualifying round: 1, N. Griffin (10), 43 points; 2, Killian Corkery (12), 42 points; 3, Liam Duggan (6), 40 points; gross, Paul Murphy (+1), 39 points; vet., John Hanrick (15), 34 points.

Sixteen players from the above competitio­n went through to the matchplay, with some very exciting matches. In the final the golf was brilliant, with Willie Cuddihy beating Gary Collins on the 20th.

Gary (+3) was conceding 14 shots to Willie and put up a great show. The crucial holes were the 13th and 14th which were both halved in birdies.

On the way to the final, Willie beat Kevin Foran, Derek Evans and Thomas Rowe while Gary got the better of Derek Wickham, Paul Murphy and Eddie Fortune.

Saturday was a good day for the Cuddihy family as Alan and Bernadette led the qualifying round of the Kerlogue Cup mixed foursomes which is sponsored by Philip and Paula Stafford.

Results: 1, Alan Cuddihy (19), Bernadette Cuddihy (22), 44 points; 2, Jim Hennessy (18), Doreen McGovern (12), 44 points; 3, Tim (7) and Carmel Quinlivan (19), 43 points; 4, Pat (12) and Norrie Goff (16), 41 points; gross, Paul Murphy (+1), Emma Fenlon (9), 69; first nine, Paddy and Carmel Lonergan, 21 points; second nine, Stan and Eileen Jackson, 25 points.

The matchplay continues this week with the final date to play the first round being July 8. Competitor­s are ask to play their games on time.

Wednesday open singles: 1, Philip Quigley (18), 45 points; 2, Frank McGee (14), 44 points; 3, John Fortune (12), 43 points; 4, Joe Moran Jnr. (5), 38 points; gross, Paul Murphy (+1), 39 points; vet., John Scott (18), 38 points.

Our two last remaining teams on the inter-club scene made their exits of late. The South Leinster team lost to Coollattin and the Senior Cup team were beaten by Blainroe.
