Doran’s Bridge win horseshoes crown

THE COUNTY horseshoes championsh­ips were held in Ferns on Thursday.

Three teams took part in Division 1. In the semi-final, Doran’s Bridge ‘A’ beat the Woodsmen by two games to one.

The final saw Doran’s Bridge play Vinegar Hill. Brendan Earle and Noel Redmond (VH) beat Harry Kinch and John Doyle (DB) 21-18.

Johnjoe Byrne and Richard Collier (DB) beat Arty Roberts and Pa Redmond (VH) 21-14, and then the last game saw Gavin Collier and Kieran O’Brien (DB) beat Walter Dempsey and Nigel O’Toole (VH) 21-16.

The substitute­s for the winning Doran’s Bridge team were Walter Christophe­r and Michael Sunderland.

In Division 2, Curracloe beat Doran’s Bridge ‘B’ in two straight games. Seán Doyle and James Jackman (C) beat Dinny Larkin and Billy McGuire (DB) 21-14, while George Doran and Seán Doran (C) bt Billy Cashe and Jason Collier (DB) 21-8.

The rest of the players for Doran’s Bridge were John Kehoe and Dean Collier, and the remainder of the Curracloe team featured Peter Byrne and Peter Wickham.

Congratula­tions to Doran’s Bridge and Curracloe on becoming county champions.

The All-Ireland singles and ringers were held in Bunclody on Sunday.

The Division 1 semi-finals saw Brendan Earle (Vinegar Hill) beat Michael Redmond (Woodsmen) 21-16, and Johnjoe Byrne (Doran’s Bridge) beat Chris McDonald (Woodsmen) 21-19.

Earle beat Byrne 22-19 in a very exciting final, while the Division 2 decider saw Michael Doyle (Gouleyduff) account for Seán Byrne (Curracloe) 21-18.

Division 1 ringers: John Giltrap (Woodsmen) 30, Michael Redmond (Woodsmen) 28.

Division 2 ringers: Larry Dunne (Gouleyduff) 11, Michael Doyle (Gouleyduff) 6.

The All-Ireland Associatio­n would like to thank PJ’s Bar for the use of their pub for the presentati­on and food afterwards.

The second round of the county league will commence this Wednesday, July 11.
