-

THERE was great sadness across Enniscorthy and the whole county in recent days following news of the passing of Billy Byrne of Castle Lane, Brownswood, Enniscorthy. An extremely well-known and well-liked character, Billy worked for Wexford County Council for a total of 40 years before his retirement and was an active member of Fianna Fáil, working hard on the campaign trail for his son Peter who served on Enniscorthy Town Council and Wexford County Council and his friend, former TD John Browne.

Billy first started out driving excavators for the council back in 1962 and went on to hold a number of different roles, culminating in his role as Waste Disposal Supervisor - one which he held from 1978 until his retirement in 2003. During this period he saw massive changes in the council, serving under a total of three County Managers and four County Engineers. Over the years he made great friends through his role, both within the council and among the general public and he was extremely well thought of by all who knew him.

Billy was also a keen lover of sports and was heavily involved over the years with the Rapparees Starlights GAA Club where he held a number of roles including selector.

Billy was a beloved husband of the late Anna Mai, loving father to Anne, Bernard, Stephen, Caroline, Peter and Billy, much loved brother of Marie and the late Peg and great friend to Anne Kehoe. He is sadly missed by his loving family, sonsin-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Jimmy, sister-in-law Teresa, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

A huge attendance is expected at St Senan’s Church today (Tuesday) at 12 noon for Billy’s funeral service. May he rest in peace.
