A step back in time with Ferns walking tour

-

MEMBERS of the public are invited to take a step back in time as a guided walking tour of Christian and medieval sites will take place in Ferns village this Saturday, July 21, getting underway from St Edan’s Cathedral at 2 p.m.

The tour is being organised by the Ferns Heritage Project and will be given by volunteers as part of a targeted campaign to develop Ferns’ tourism potential.

Ferns is rich in history with evidence of settlement reaching back to the Bronze Age. As the Ancient Capital of Leinster and the royal seat of King Diarmuid MacMurrough, Ferns is central to Wexford’s medieval history.

A much maligned King, Diarmuid MacMurrough was said to be ruthless and ambitious and there are many views and stories as to his escapades.

These stories and more will play an important part of the tour as you walk in the footsteps of saints, knights and kings. Starting at the Cathedral and Abbey area, you will be brought up Main Street, where you’ll see the dramatic new murals featuring key characters in the Ferns medieval story and then a short walk to Ferns Castle. This part of the tour will be covered by OPW guides who will guide you through the Castle’s South East tower, visiting the beautiful medieval chapel and up to the top where spectacular views of the surrounding countryside give a sense of why the Castle was located on this spot.

To book a place on the tour please email: fernsheritagetour@gmail.com or phone Catherine 087-4189740.
