GUNNING FOR GLORY
THE members of Gorey & District Rifle and Pistol Club have set their sights on travelling to America to participate in NRA affiliated competitions and with that in mind they’ve just held their inaugural NRA 50ft rapid fire competition.
The event, which saw the members use handguns, took place at the club’s shooting range in Gorey Business Park.
Speaking to this newspaper about the competition club founder, Paul Walsh, said it was a great success but the bigger prize is getting members over to compete in America.
‘We started the club about three years ago and we currently have around 55 members but we are always open to new people joining,’ he said.
‘We became affiliated to the NRA (National Rifle Association) in America and we run affiliated competitions here, through them,’ he added.
When the club runs a competition the results are sent to the NRA and having been verified are returned to Gorey.
‘Our membership is growing and it’s going really well which is great and we’re open to anyone over the age of 14,’ said Mr Walsh.
While the club has been going for three years the shooting range has been in place for five and the club is run by professionally trained and fully qualified coaches and officers.
‘We’ve been running club shoots for a long time but the goal is to bring a team to America for competitions,’ said Mr Walsh.
While the rapid shoot competition utilised handguns the club also organises competitions for other types of weapons too.
The club is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 p.m. and competitions take place on Saturdays.
