SUN SHINES BRIGHTLY ON FANTASTIC SHOW

- By BRENDAN KEANE

THIS YEAR’S annual Bannow and Rathangan Show was one of the most successful yet with glorious weather adding to the enjoyment for the thousands of visitors who visited Killag.

While equestrian events form a big part of the shows schedule there was an eclectic range of competitions and fringe attractions on-site to keep all visitors thoroughly entertained throughout the afternoon regardless of their age.

With visitor numbers up on last year the 70-strong organising committee was delighted with how the event went. Speaking to this newspaper Secretary, Liz Freeman, said a lot of work went into the ensuring that conditions were ideal for the show-jumping aspect of the day especially with regard to the ground underfoot.

‘We had watered the field beforehand to make sure the ground was good for the jumping,’ said Ms Freeman.

‘It went really and while we don’t know the exact number of people who attended it was definitely up on last year which was great,’ she added.

She thanked everyone involved in making the show a success and paid tribute to the hard-working committee and to the 500 volunteers who helped out on the day itself through various roles like stewarding.

It takes a massive amount of work to organise a show of that scale and Ms Freeman pointed out that without the help of those 500 people it would not run as smoothly as it did.

Never people to rest on their laurels, however, the committee is now looking forward to next year’s event which will take place on July

11. ‘Next year will be a very big year for the show as it will be celebrating its 70th anniversary,’ said Ms Freeman.

‘ That will be a big one for everyone involved,’ she added.

From animals to vintage cars and tractors the show had everything and the fact it was bathed in brilliant sunshine just made it even more special.
