MOYNE RANGERS ‘PENALTY KINGS OF WEXFORD 2018’

WITH World Cup 2018 having already seen more than it’s fair share of spot kicks, there was no shortage of inspiration as a total of 31 teams from right across the county gathered at the home of Moyne Rangers in Enniscorthy for their annual Penalty Kings fundraiser.

Now in its sixth year, the fundraiser has always proved extremely popular and this year saw the biggest turnout yet as players took to the pitch in the sunshine to test their mettle from 12 yards. There was a great atmosphere on the day as teams hoped to walk away with the €500 in prize money and the title of ‘penalty kings’.

The structure of the competition saw teams battle it out in a league format first, before progressing to knock-out stages and the final. Each team, consisting of a goalkeeper and four penalty takers, paid €50 for entry meaning that the event raised in excess of €1,000 for the club.

Chairman Kevin Lawlor was delighted with how things went. ‘We’re delighted with it,’ he said. ‘We’ve been doing it for six years and we always get a great crowd. Initially it was the brainchild of committee member Aidan Browne and it’s just taken legs. The format works really well and everything is done in a great atmosphere and we’ve never had a cross word from competitors yet.’

The winners on the day were ‘It’s Coming Home’ captained by Barry Sinnott. While it wasn’t coming home for England at the World Cup, €500 was coming home for Barry and the lads and they were delighted with the win.
