Billy Roche gives seal of approval to staging of his own play ‘Belfry’

-

WEXFORD writer Billy Roche opened the summer play season at Gorey Little Theatre recently by introducing his very own classic ‘Belfry’.

A large crowd gathered in the theatre to see the first showing of this year’s July production. Mr Roche introduced the play, and thanked Gorey Little Theatre for picking his work.

‘I remember travelling to England in the 90s with a young Aidan Gillen and Gary Lydon to put on this show in the Bush Theatre,’ said Mr Roche. ‘It was a great time, and the two men went on to do bigger things after it.’

‘Belfry’, alongside ‘Poor Beast in the Rain’ and ‘A Handful of Stars’, is part of a trilogy of plays known as ‘ The Wexford Trilogy’.

The guests got to view some fascinating images captured by members of the Gorey Camera Club before they sat down to enjoy the show.

The exhibition will continue throughout July for members of the public to see during the interval of the play.

The cast includes Andy Doyle as Artie; Catherine Stafford as Angela; Alex Murphy as Dominic; Niall McGrath as Donal; and Brendan Redmond as Father Pat.

Set in a church vestry and belfry in Wexford town, ‘Belfry’ is a romantic comedy about a bell-ringing sacristan, a meek and mild bachelor, who falls in love with a married woman.

Admission is €13 and available from the box office on the night. The Duck restaurant, The Kitchen, Eco, Katie Daly’s and The Coach House are doing dinner and theatre ticket options too.

The July play ‘Belfry’ will run every Tuesday and Thursday, at 8.30 p.m.
