Crowds flock to Adamstown Show

- By DAVID LOOBY

SCORCHING HOT weather couldn’t keep the crowds from the Adamstown Show, which was bigger and better than ever this year.

Thanks to a huge effort by the organising committee who ensured the showground arenas were watered in the five days leading up to the big event, the fields kindly donated by the Cullen, Whelan and Redmond families were thronged with people from early in the morning for the first of the equestrian events at 11 a.m.

With a fantastic line-up of competitions and a great variety of fun activities to enjoy, this year’s show had it all.

The M&T Plant Hire sponsored Mervue Equine Grand Prix 135 event was won by Graiguenamanagh man Jack Ryan on Money Broom Dancer (owned by his mother Marguerite), followed closely in second place by Vincent Byrne on Mr Rockefeller, with Floyd O in third place and Gurtera Cara Dubh in 4th.

Jack, who is the son of John and Marguerite Ryan, was one of the stars in attendance, ahead of his trip the following morning to represent Ireland in the European Young Riders Competition.

The Tatterstalls Redmills Broodmare Class was won by Princess Tara of Thistletown Stud near Campile owned by Jimmy Furlong whose daughter Eimear won the young handlers’ section sponsored by M&T Plant Hire.

It was an all girl affair in the Cooney Furlong 11 Class which had 55 starters. The winner was Tracy Walshe on Corlands Clipper, followed by Sara Gorman on Take A Gamble and Marie Hartley on Kilpatrick Fred.

The Nitrofert 120 winner was Vincent Byrne on LVS Shelby, followed in second place by Patrick Byrne on Whispering Looks and Wesley Byrne in third place on Canburca Paris Diamond.

Ciara Browne was the winner of the T&A Agri Contractors event on Tykillen Impact, followed by Meabh Byrne on Bally common Kimberley in second and Jamie Scallan on Sigginstown Maid in third.

There was a huge carnival atmosphere throughout the day with temperatures hovering in the high twenties.

Children enjoyed the amusements which were on a bigger scale than previous years.

Wexford Rose Saoirse Walsh was on hand to help adjudicate the most appropriately dressed lady and everyone enjoyed the dog show and the sheep competitions featuring more than 170 wooly wonders.

The Hunt Chase was won by the local talented Wexford Hunt Club.

Plenty of cakes and scones baked by talented local women were enjoyed throughout the day, along with refreshments for relief from the heat. The final horse events concluded shortly after 8.30 p.m. on what was a fantastic family day in Adamstown.
