Three from three for Bunclody

- JASON GOODISON

HWH-BUNCLODY 2-14 SARSFIELDS 0-10

HWH-BUNCLODY overcame a sluggish start to put Sarsfields to the sword in the Greenstar Under-20 football championship Division 1B in Páirc Charman on Wednesday.

Indeed, the home team dominated the early stages and led at the interval by two points, having amassed five more wides than their opponents, and they appeared to be in the driving seat.

David Gouldson and Conall Clancy were causing trouble for the Wexford town side in the early exchanges, getting four of their side’s six scores before the break.

For the visitors, Darren Doyle appeared to be the source of almost all of their threat, and he was on target for three-quarters of Bunclody’s scores as they trailed 6-4 at the interval.

After the re-start, the game was level by the 36th minute. Another brace for Doyle and a single by Peadair Cowman brought one response from Shane Bergin.

Then, Cathal Doyle fired into the net after his long run and Bunclody never looked back.

Cowman and John Dunne added further minors before Adam Hogan picked out Jack Regan who rounded the Sars ‘keeper and fired into the net, leaving seven between the sides (2-9 to 0-8).

Sarsfields shuffled their pack with three substitutions but could only manage two more points in the final 15 minutes. Andrew Harrington scored his side’s only free and Clancy added his fourth point.

HWH-Bunclody then closed out the game in comfortable fashion. Ciarán Kavanagh rattled the crossbar and earned his only score before Josh Martin and Cathal Doyle also grabbed points.

Substitute Cathal Dunbar had the positive impact that the Sars might have expected from their late changes, as he grabbed two late points to extend the victory into a double digit win.

This result leaves HWH-Bunclody at the top of Division 1B with a one hundred per cent record, but the home side sit at the other end of the spectrum, without a win to their name.
