Rackard League innovation
ANOTHER INNOVATION this year was the Bodibro regional hurling competition, which was a joint venture between the Rackard League and Coiste na nOg Loch Garman.
Each primary school around the county was allowed to pick one or two players to represent their school in this competition. Six centres of excellence were picked for each regional team to be prepared by G.A.A. coaches.
The centres allocated for the indoor training were St. Joseph’s, Kilmore, Horeswood, Duffry Rovers, Craanford and Blackwater.
Each group had three weeks of training and it was envisaged that each region would have a representative team. Unfortunately, the snow came and upset our plans, and the competition finals didn’t take place until mid-June in the Centre of Excellence in Ferns.
The standard of hurling was very high. The teams used different colours for their jerseys which were supplied by Bodibro.
Blackwater beat Duffry Rovers in the ‘A’ final while Craanford won the ‘B’ final.
Kevin Waters (Chairman) presented the shield to the Blackwater captain, Simon Roche from Scoil Mochua (Oulart).
The competition was a resounding success and it is envisaged a similar football competition will take place in the autumn. We also intend to introduce a camogie and girls’ football competition at a later stage.
