GOREYCRICKET

-

Gorey Cricket Club is organising a bus for the club’s Russell Court Cup Trophy to be played in Park Avenue, Railway Union’s ground, on Sunday, July 22.

The final will be a T20 match versus Tyrellstown at 2 p.m. Anyone interested in reserving a seat, please contact Al (086-1599074).

The bus departs Gorey at 11.30 a.m. with an expected return no later than 8 p.m.

This has been a productive season so far, with our Seniors progressing strongly in their Division 14 league, albeit losing recently to Clontarf 6 by just nine runs as we remain focused on gaining promotion in only our second year of competitive cricket.

The previous week Gorey defeated Laois 3 by eight wickets, scoring 97 for two to their rivals’ 96 all out.

Umar Khan hit 51 runs, and Anslem Diaz added 21, with young Rehmad Ahmed bowling two wickets for 15. Our next opponents will be An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s local club, Castleknock, whom we expect to give a ‘Céad Míle Féilte’ to Gorey with a solid performance expected.

The Under-15s performed heroically versus Adamstown (Dublin) with some notable displays from the youngsters. Captained by Isobel Walsh, bowling a number of wickets, and Brady Archer, who excelled at fielding, they were undone by their opponents’ two very strong bowlers/ batters.

However, 48 runs for six wickets all out was a respectable score considering it was our first competitive match at this level. It was more of a learning curve as we continue to compete with established clubs from Dublin.

Team: Isobel Walsh (capt.), Ross Wallace, Aaron Lett, Jake Walsh, Brady Archer, William Stephens, Dylan Hendy, Marcus Wallace, Stephen Hendy, Robert Leonard.

The next match in Courtown is against Leinster on Friday, July 20.

Cricket Leinster are hosting a coaching event in the grounds of Wexford Wanderers Cricket Club on Friday, July 20. This will run from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. with emphasis on drills, technique and small-sided games for Under-11s using a soft ball.

The afternoon session runs from 1.15 to 3.15 p.m. for Under-13s using a hard ball. This event is free and open to interested children who have some or no experience in cricket.

Gorey Cricket Club’s second team played their first-ever competitive fixture on Saturday as they narrowly lost to Railway Union 5 in their Minor 2 Cup round one tie.

With the Courtown ground basking in sunshine, Railway batted first and made slow but steady progress in reaching 80/1 at drinks.

Gorey’s opening bowlers, Razwan Ahmed and Pavitter Rathaur, bowled with pace and control but couldn’t quite find the penetration needed to trouble the Railway openers.

After drinks the Dublin side broke free with some expansive hitting from Srathsore Gopal, with the young all-rounder hitting four boundaries in a row at one point, however the Gorey bowling attack pulled them back with both Gareth Roberts and Brendan Archer picking up two wickets apiece.

Brady Archer, the 13-year-old off-spinner, proved particularly effective. The youngster bowled with flight and guile as he took a well-deserved wicket on his Senior competitive debut.

Gorey’s reply got off to a disastrous start as they lost both openers early, but some great batting from Brian Willoughby saw off the initial threat and settled things down with support from Gary Murphy and Gareth Roberts.

Gorey were ahead at drinks on 90/3, but a middle-order collapse left them reeling at 122/7 off 28 overs.

Willoughby remained steadfast at the crease however and found a willing partner in Pavitter, who began hitting the ball to all parts of the ground and sparked a glint of hope for the home team.

Needing 25 off the last four overs, Gorey looked well set to challenge, but the loss of Pavitter to a catch on the boundary put paid to hopes of victory.

The final over fizzled out as Gorey fell by just six runs, with Willoughby’s monumental 69 proving to be in vain.

Scorecard: Railway Union 5ths, 214 for 6 (S. Gopal 95, N. Clarke 55, R. Gomez 21, G. Roberts 2-24, Brendan Archer 2-28, Brady Archer 1-30, G. Murphy 1-34) beat Gorey 2nds, 208 for 8 (B. Willoughby 69, P. Rathaur 33, G. Roberts 22, G. Murphy 15, N. Jagoe 3-40, S. Gopal 2-32, A. Khan 2-35) by six runs.
