Carmel promotes her colleagues at the Choosing Summer Reads event in library
SITTING out in the sunshine and flicking through a good book is truly one of life’s simple pleasures. Be it for the back garden or a beach abroad, best-selling author Carmel Harrington was on hand at Enniscorthy Library last week to offer her advice of the best picks for your book bag this summer.
While you could probably fill your summer book bag with wonderful works from Carmel herself, such as ‘The Woman at 72 Derry Lane’ and ‘The Things I Should Have Told You’, she arrived at the library with the goal not of selling her own works, but promoting the works of other writers, colleagues and friends and ensuring that those in attendance got to grips with a few page turners this summer.
There was a focus on this year’s literary festival in her selections, with many of the authors mentioned attending from November 2 to 4. Writers such as Liz Nugent, Shane Dunphy and Hazel Gaynor were strongly recommended by Carmel along with works by the likes of Marian Keyes, Cathy Kelly and Emma Hannigan - particularly ‘Letters to my Daughters’.
Featuring highly on Carmel’s list of recommendations was ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’ by Heather Morris along with ‘The Handmaids Tale’ by Margaret Atwood, which has since become a successful TV show. While it falls just a little too late to make it onto a list of summer reads, Carmel herself launches her new novel ‘A Thousand Roads Home’ in October and everyone present was eager to get their hands on a copy as soon as possible. Librarian Jarlath Glynn, as always, thanked Carmel for coming along and looked forward to welcoming her back with her latest release in the near future.
