Golf Club does tee-rrific work for Special Olympics club
IT was the final outing of the season for the avid golfers of Enniscorthy Special Olympics Club as they teed off at Enniscorthy Golf Club. For the past seven years, a group of volunteers led by club member Liam Dunbar, have organised to bring members of the local Special Olympics Club out on the course and help them with some skills and advice as they look to compete on a national scale.
The gang meet up every Friday morning and go through a range of skills from putting and chipping right up to playing a few holes on the beautiful course. Liam is joined by two other volunteers and they do great work with the athletes who express a keen interest in the sport.
‘We’d usually have a group of about 12 to 14 every Friday,’ he explained. ‘We’ll spend a couple of hours working through all kinds of skills. We use the driving range, the putting green and the chipping green and then sometimes some of the clients will head out and play a couple of holes on the course as well. They love it and it’s a bit of craic for everyone involved.’
The group got together for what would be their final outing on the fairways ahead of the summer break recently and the occasion was used to present a cheque on behalf of the Golf Club to the local Special Olympics Club.
The money was raised during a recent table quiz held at the club and it was decided that the Special Olympics Club should be one of the causes to benefit from a €250 cheque.
Margaret Nolan gratefully received the donation on behalf of the club and thanked everyone at Enniscorthy Golf Club for their continued support of local Special Olympics athletes.
