Council staff ‘doing their best’ on litter issue

-

ONCE again littering featured pretty highly on the agenda at the most recent meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council. Cllr Barbara Anne Murphy highlighted an ongoing problem with refuse sacks full of rubbish being abandoned at the bottle banks in Kilmyshall.

‘It’s awful,’ she said. ‘ There are several bags of rubbish there and they’ve been there for months. They’re attracting rats and everything at this stage. Could we not put permanent CCTV there to prevent this kind of thing? The sooner the new litter laws come in the better. It’s driving us all crazy.’

Director of Services John Carley said that the council crews were doing the best they could at the moment with the rapid response crews being established for each district. He also said that there were some GDPR issues that needed to be ironed out in relation to CCTV.

Chairman Willie Kavanagh continued on from his party colleague Keith Doyle’s heated debate with South East Radio’s Alan Corcoran by once again accusing the Morning Mix presenter of being ‘unfair’ in relation to litter.

‘He’s not giving Wexford County Council any credit at all,’ he said. ‘It’s disappointing. On the topic of litter, they’re saying that Curracloe is disgusting and all this kind of thing.’

Mr Carley responded, saying: ‘I was down in Curracloe there recently and I don’t think that the council staff can do much more. They’re down there in the morning, the afternoon and the evening emptying the bins. We’re dealing with very large crowds over the summer.’

Cllr John O’Rourke complimented the council staff on their work keeping the beaches clean, while Cllr Keith Doyle pointed out that around 50% of people ringing into the radio station on the day stated that people should bring their own rubbish home with them.
