Tony’ s love of his native Ennis co rt hy ran deep
Patrick A. ‘ Tony’ Davis, of Elkhart, Indiana, USA died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, July 22, 2018.
A native of Enniscorthy, Patrick was the child of William Davis and Mary Callaghan. His father was a soldier in the British Army, serving in the Boer War and WWI.
Growing up in his beloved Enniscorthy, Tony and his family lived at 6 Vinegar Hill Villas before moving to 6 Fr Cullen’s Terrace.
He played for the Starlights and Enniscorthy Rugby Club and workd at Davis Flour Mill for many years.
Tony married Mary Nye, an Elkhart native, at St Mary’s Church in Shipley, England on October 8, 1960. Tony and Mary settled in the U.S. in 1961 and Tony became a U.S. citizen in 1975.
He was a welder by trade and used his skill in later years to build beautiful wrought iron pieces that ranged from full size beds and dining tables to doll furniture for his granddaughters.
After he retired in 1998, he worked for his son-in-law at Antonio’s Restaurant in Elkhart, where he was known as the resident Irishman in an Italian restaurant.
In addition to his wife of 57 years, Tony is survived by his children: Betsy (Peter Daly) Davis of Cortlandt Manor, NY; Kathleen (John) Hudak of Warsaw, IN; Erin (Paul) Cataldo of Goshen, IN; and Patrick (Traci) Davis of Humble, TX. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Grainne and Conor Daly, James Stanton, Alannah, Tony, Caitlin, Carmela, Gemma and Gianna Cataldo and Brianna, Ailey and Liam Davis; and a beloved great-grandchild, Dante Stanton. A sister, Anna Hayden, of Birmingham, England, survives.
He was preceded in death by 11 brothers and 2 sisters.
His love of Ireland – its history, music and storytelling – will remain a lasting legacy to his family.
Patrick was laid to rest at St Vincent’s Cemetery, Elkhart, Indiana following his funeral Mass at the St Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
