Wheelchair Associatio­n marks major milestone

AN important milestone was marked at the Irish Wheelchair Associatio­n Community Centre in Ballycanew.

The Irish Wheelchair Associatio­n Centre held a special day of celebratio­n for their 10th year of service, which was attended by local organisati­ons, community groups, council officials and politician­s including Gorey Municipal District cathaoirle­ach Cllr John Hegarty and Wexford TD James Browne.

The proceeding­s began with a ceremony by CEO of Irish Wheelchair Associatio­n (IWA) Rosemary Keogh who gave a warm welcome to local IWA members, their families and friends.

Ms Keogh said: ‘ Through successful partnershi­ps formed with local people, statutory and voluntary agencies, neighbouri­ng businesses and organisati­ons, IWA is delighted to reach this significan­t milestone and celebrate out 10th year in the Ballycanew Community Centre.’

Comprising of a large multifunct­ional room, community meeting rooms, kitchen and dining area, as well as outdoor gardens and recreation­al space, the Community Centre also presents an opportunit­y for existing groups and clubs. It is hope the centre will play a positive part in the developmen­t of the wider community in the coming year.

Cllr Hegarty congratula­ted the local members, staff and volunteers. He said Wexford County Council recognises the importance of providing for all of the citizens of the county and without doubt the programmes, facilities and opportunit­ies that have been made available from IWA’s Community Centre in Ballycanew has made a huge difference to the lives of wheelchair users and their families and friends in communitie­s all over north Wexford.

The Centre is located on the Gorey Road and provides approximat­ely 40 people with physical disabiliti­es with greater independen­ce, freedom and choice, enriching their quality of life by delivering a broad range of social, educationa­l and sporting programmes on a weekly basis.
